I took the slow train down to Tainan during Christmas 2022, carrying a cheap kids' camera I’d picked up to try my hand at photography. I’ve always been drawn to aging hardware; I used to be obsessed with modding Gameboys, specifically for the challenge of working within strict hardware and software constraints to produce chiptune music.
In that same vein, I thought it would be a fun exercise to use a low-quality lens to capture a city less traveled. I don’t plan on falling down a vintage camera rabbit hole just yet, but I do want to experiment more with this kind of lo-fi aesthetic and perhaps some mixed media down the line.
For this series, I liked the idea of juxtaposing these intentionally grainy, low-res outputs of Tainan with the local tourism mascot, "Saba Boy." There’s no deep hidden meaning or grand intent beyond that visual contrast.
